Dropped Connections after large transfers

After all the recent problems in NYC I finally started to have decent connectivity. However lately my connection has been dropping during large data tranfers.

For example if I start a bittorrent download, my connection will completely drop, only rebooting the cable modem fixes it.

Anyone have ideas on what would cause this?

Thanks,
mlr

Ummm now that's whacky.... two questions.
What kind of modem make/model.
and how far into the xfr do you get?

I haven't heard anyone else commenting on it. Doesn't mean that isn't the case just means there not making it far enough up the food chain to me if it's common.

grr, and they just switched out my modem before this problem. I have been testing with linux torrent isos, and it always drops out around 700M-1G.

It doesn't happen right away, but usually about 1 hour after the xfers.

I have a Toshiba PCX2500 provided by RCN. I attached a mrtg graph showing that it does happen, I started two isos at 1am, and my connection completly drops in about an hour.

thanks for the help.

I have a level 2 tech scheduled to come out on monday. They say that they will charge me ~$50 if they don't find anything wrong. My line is dropping every day after I start transfering around a few gigs, it even happened while talking on the phone with rcn tech.

I just want to make sure its nothing on my side, anyone know what are the chances of them charging me?

Is it a level 2 tech or is it a level 2 escalated Trouble call?

They said it was a escalated trouble call, and a different level tech was coming out.

I am using a linux pc as a router for my network and it has been working fine up until a month ago. I switched out nics and nothing would fix this problem. I am still trying to make sure it is nothing on my end, I don't want to get charged this.

thanks

Ok. the tech may be a different tech than the first but not a level 2 tech. Simply because level 2 techs are RF techs and generally dont do "house calls". Have you completely removed the linux box out of the equation and went 1 pc to the modem? If so did the problem continue? Also if it did and you have multiple machines try a different one straight through to the modem.

The phone support should have mentioned all that already. If you did all that and still having issues then its safe to say it is most likely not an issue with your equipment, thus no charge.

On top of all that try to swap out the Cat5/6 cabling as a safe bet. i think 10 feet goes for like 10 bucks so its safeguard over the 50$+ that you would get whacked for.

I've been out of support there for over a month now and not sure if they've radically changed any policies , but when i was there what I mentioned above would be the way to go.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm going to do some more tests on my side before I have this tech come. I currently have a linksys router in between my linux router and the cable modem to see what is going on. If the linksys disconnects from the cable modem I think it is safe to say that it is the cable modem.

Thanks,
