Meet the 2019 Alabama HS football champions (2024)

Well, it's over.

The 2019 Alabama high school football season ended last week as the AHSAA crowned its seven champions at the Super 7 at Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Class 1A: Lanett (14-0)

Record: 14-0

Championship game: Lanett 41, Mars Hill 30

The skinny: Alabama commit Kristian Story threw two touchdowns, ran for two touchdowns and forced two turnovers on defense – intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble – to end a record-breaking career with a second state title in the last three years. Lanett also won the 2A title in 2017.

Did you know?: Story finished his career with 13,219 yards of total offense and 175 touchdowns accounted, both AHSAA career records.

Class 2A: Fyffe

Record: 15-0

Championship game: Fyffe 56, Reeltown 7

The skinny: The Red Devils jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the first quarter and cruised past Reeltown in the championship game. Fyffe has won 30 straight games and four of the last six Class 2A championships.

Did you know?: Fyffe's starting defense allowed only three points all season, and the Red Devils surrendered just 43 points in 15 wins. Fyffe is also 85-3 in the last six seasons.

Quotable: "We started calling it an antique. Six years ago I stumbled onto it and thought, 'This suits us great.' I knew we'd have the execution and discipline to run it and the kids bought in. It's an usual offense and most teams don't see it but once a year. Class 3A: Piedmont

Record: 14-1

Championship game: Piedmont 26, Mobile Christian 24

The skinny: Jakari Foster caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Hayes with 35 seconds remaining, completing a comeback that saw the Bulldogs trail 10-0 and 17-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Did you know?: Piedmont has won four state championships since 2009 and this year's title avenged a 2018 championship-game loss to Flomaton.

Quotable: "We just couldn't panic. We did a good job of that. It didn't look like we were in a big hurry to some folks, but we had confidence and, to be honest with you, I wanted it to be the final drive of the game. Class 4A: UMS-Wright

Record: 14-0

Championship game: UMS-Wright 28, Jacksonville 17

The skinny: UMS-Wright extended one of the best runs in AHSAA history, winning 33 straight games and a third straight 4A state title.

Did you know?: UMS-Wright coach Terry Curtis won his eighth AHSAA state title – tying the record set the night before by Central-Clay's Danny Horn.

Quotable: "The only word I can use is amazing. We are really undersized when you look at our defensive front and really our offensive front as well. For these guys to stay healthy and find a way to win is incredible." -- Curtis

Class 5A: Central-Clay

Record: 13-2

Championship game: Central-Clay 31, Pleasant Grove 27

The skinny: Central-Clay's defense stopped Pleasant Grove inside the 5 at the end of both halves in the championship game, including tackling Spartans' quarterback Zyquez Perryman at the 1 on the game's final play.

Did you know?: Central-Clay became the first coach in AHSAA history to win eight state titles.

Class 6A: Oxford

Record: 14-1

Championship game: Oxford 14, Spanish Fort 13

The skinny: Oxford's Trequon Fegans scoring the game-winning touchdown with 23 seconds remaining to beat Spanish Fort.

Did you know?: Oxford won its first state championship since 1993.

Quotable: "I'm surrounded by a bunch of winners." – Oxford coach Keith Etheredge, noting the Yellow Jackets won it last three games by a combined total of 11 points.

Class 7A: Thompson (12-1)

Record: 12-1

Championship game: Thompson 40, Central-Phenix City 14

The skinny: Quarterback Sawyer Pate threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more in the championship game, as Thompson routed a Central team that beat the Warriors 52-7 in the 2018 title game.

Did you know?: Thompson won its first state championship since 1982.
