Washington, D.C. – A man has been arrested for a First-Degree Sexual Abuse while Armed (Knife) incident that occurred in Southeast on Tuesday.

The suspect approached the victim in the 500 block of Lebaum Street, Southeast, armed with a knife, and forced the victim into an unwanted sexual act before fleeing the scene. Detectives later observed the suspect in the 3100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue, Southeast, and placed him under arrest. A knife was recovered from the suspect.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Darnell Peoples of Northeast, has been charged with First Degree Sexual Abuse while Armed (Knife). Peoples was previously arrested in September 2021 for Third-Degree Sexual Abuse and Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse offenses.

Baltimore, MD – Shakur Latrell Sanders, 29, of Maryland, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in a drunk driving incident that resulted in the death of Robert Horne Jr., a good Samaritan.

On August 13, 2023, Robert Horne Jr., 50, of Smithsburg, Maryland, was helping a stranded motorist on an interstate ramp off I-395 when Sanders, driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV at over 101 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone, crashed into another vehicle and then into Horne. The impact launched Horne off the ramp, causing him to plummet 100 feet into the water below. Horne, a security guard at the Baltimore Convention Center, died from multiple broken bones and drowning, according to prosecutors.

Sanders, with a blood alcohol content of .25, was arrested following the incident. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter before Judge Kendra Ausby at the Baltimore Circuit Court on June 7, 2024. In exchange for his plea, Sanders received an eight-year prison sentence and five years of supervised probation. He was initially facing up to 15 years.

Horne's mother, Nadine Heath, attended the plea hearing and described Sanders' guilty plea as “bittersweet.” She expressed forgiveness, citing her Christian faith and Sanders' request for forgiveness in a letter he wrote after the crash.

During the hearing, Sanders apologized to Horne’s family, acknowledging that his words offered little solace. His attorney, Mark Sobel, emphasized Sanders' remorse and noted that Sanders had turned himself in promptly after the crash.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who announced Sanders' arrest, reported that Horne had been using a warning light to alert drivers and was directing traffic away from himself when the incident occurred.

Wilmington, DE – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred early this morning on I-495 in Wilmington, resulting in the death of one man.

On June 10, 2024, at approximately 2:12 a.m., a white 2020 International HV613 truck tractor, operated by the United States Postal Service, was traveling northbound in the right lane of I-495, north of Edgemoor Road. The truck, which had no trailer attached, was struck by a silver 2009 Nissan Altima traveling in the same direction. For reasons under investigation, the right-side front of the Nissan collided with the left-side rear tires of the USPS truck.

The impact caused the USPS truck to spin towards the eastern edge of the roadway, strike a raised metal guardrail, and overturn down an embankment, coming to rest in the grassy area between I-495 and the railroad tracks. The Nissan then struck the guardrail along the right shoulder before stopping in the northbound lanes of I-495.

The USPS truck driver, a 59-year-old man from Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification. The Nissan driver, a 31-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately seven hours for investigation and clearance.

Washington, D.C. – Detectives have apprehended a second suspect involved in a double fatal shooting in Southeast from March 2023.

On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at approximately 7:44 p.m., Seventh District officers responded to the 2700 block of Bruce Place, Southeast, following reports of a shooting. Officers discovered two men with gunshot wounds. Dana Faulkner, 23, of Southeast, died at the scene. The second victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after, officers were called to the intersection of Wheeler Road and Mississippi Avenue, Southeast, for reports of an unconscious person. They found 15-year-old Abdul Fuller, of Southeast, with critical gunshot wounds. Fuller died on March 9, 2023. Investigations revealed he was injured in the Bruce Place shooting.

On December 21, 2023, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested a 19-year-old man from Northeast, charging him with First Degree Murder while Armed (Premeditated).

On Tuesday, members of the Florida and Caribbean Fugitive Task Force apprehended a 17-year-old male from Northeast in Jacksonville, FL. He faces the same charge and will be extradited to the District of Columbia.
