Introducing the 2024 All-News-Herald Girls Soccer First Team

MALLORY BOTTEN | Grosse Ile: A big reason for a Grosse Ile repeat trip to the Division 3 state championship game this past season was the play of Mallory Botten at the forward position. The junior striker for the Red Devils earned all-Huron League, all-district, all-region, and first-team all-state honors after recording 20 goals and assisting on 20 others.

CLAIRE GONYEA | Trenton: One of the more dynamic careers in recent Downriver area history came to an end this past spring as Claire Gonyea ended her Trenton tenure on a high note. Receiving first-team all-state honors for a second straight season, Gonyea finished with nearly 120 career points after potting a team-best 32 goals and helping on 17 others in the spring, leading the Trojans to yet another Downriver League title.

CHLOE WISHART | Trenton: Arguably the biggest scoring threat locally in the middle of the pitch, Chloe Wishart was the central figure in pushing any and all scoring opportunities for Trenton this past season. the junior midfielder earned all-Downriver League and second-team all-state honors after tallying 33 points (16 goals and 17 assists) for the perennial power Trojans.

GROSSE ILE MIDFIELDERS: The strength of this latest edition of Grosse Ile girls soccer was in the midfield and a trio of players — senior Cassidy Eblin and juniors Lila Pascuzzi and Ella Gatti — displayed that on a daily basis. Three of nine all-state honorees for the Devils this past spring, that group alone combined for 19 goals and 23 assists. All three also earned all-district and all-region recognition while the junior tandem were also named all-league.

ADDISON DOLENCIC | New Boston Huron: The team over at Huron arguably had its best season in program history, suffering its only loss of the campaign to Trenton in a big-ticket district championship game. Opposing squads regularly had trouble scoring on the Chiefs and the play of Addison Dolencic on the back line was a big reason for that. The junior defender earned all-Huron League, district, region, and second team all-state honors after helping earn Huron 13 shutout wins.

ALAINA KORODY | Grosse Ile: Despite battling significant injuries during her first two years of high school soccer, Alaina Korody returned this past spring and was a big X-factor for Grosse Ile all season long. A considerable scoring threat on the back line, the junior defender received all-state recognition after racking up eight goals and assisting on four others. She delivered the game-winning shootout penalty kick to push the islanders into the state title game.

LEILA GORNO | Trenton: When her forward and midfielder teammates were generating scoring chances on one end of the field, Leila Gorno was holding things down in net for Trenton. Gorno pitched 15 more shutouts this past spring for the Trojans, nine of which came against conference foes. The senior goalkeeper ended her career with 44 career shutouts and having earned all-league and all-state honors for two straight years.

AUBREE KORODY | Grosse Ile: It was oftentimes a sibling scoring push for Grosse Ile as Aubree Korody joined alongside sister and teammate Alaina upfield for opportunities. Yet another all-state honoree for the Devils, the junior forward finished her season with double-digit goals (14) and assists (13), having earned all-league, district, and region honors in the process.

RYLIE CASETTE | New Boston Huron: While Dolencic was solidifying the back line, it was Rylie Casette headlining all the scoring chances that Huron garnered in games throughout the spring. A second-team all-News-Herald honoree in 2023, the forward Casette finished up her junior season with a team-leading 25 goals to go along with nearly a dozen assists, earning all-conference, district, region, and state honors.

KATE HAVEMAN | Trenton: Another returning all-area performer from a season ago, Kate Haveman followed up a strong sophom*ore campaign in 2023 with another steady output this past spring. The junior forward for Trenton repeated as an all-state honoree after collecting 14 goals and helping on three others, helping push the Trojans to a conference and district championship.

SOPHIA MALDONADO | Allen Park: One would be hard-pressed to find a bigger scoring threat in the middle of the pitch than Sophia Maldonado at Allen Park. Earning all-area honors for the third time in as many seasons (second time as a first team recipient), the junior midfielder led the Jags in scoring with single-season school record 25 goals. Head coach Scott Fowler says the all-state honoree “continues to get better every year.”

ADDISON NEMETH | Grosse Ile: It has been career overall on the island for Addison Nemeth, who will be taking her soccer-playing talents to the University of Michigan-Dearborn come next school year. The senior defender for the Devils was named honorable mention all-state for a second straight season after matching her point output from a season ago (five).

MONICA ARNDT | Grosse Ile: Having big shoes to fill following the graduation of all-state goalie and teammate Cailey O’Farrell the year prior, Monica Arndt assumed the role of starting keeper for Grosse Ile. The junior netminder picked up where O’Farrell left off, earning all-state honors herself after leading the Devils to 13 shutout wins. She made two key saves during their shootout win over Detroit Country Day in the D3 state semifinals.

GABRIELLA EMELIAN | New Boston Huron: Huron figures to be boast one of the best scoring tandems up top come 2025 with Gabby Emelian in the fold. ISABELLE MALDONADO | Allen Park: Another instance of sisters leading their respective teams, Isabelle joins her younger sister Sophia among the ranks of first-team all-area honorees from this past season. a second-team honoree in 2023, the senior and all-conference recipient logged double-digit goals (10) and assists (13) despite playing primarily the holding midfielder role. Coach Fowler described the elder Maldonado as a “lock down defensive player in addition with being a scoring threat.”

MADELYNN GLAZIER | Allen Park Cabrini: One of many big contributors to Cabrini’s first-ever Catholic League championship this past spring was the play of Madelynn Glazier in the midfield. OLIVIA ZUCARRO | Grosse Ile: The folks from the island had no shortage of scoring options across the field and Olivia Zucarro was one of them. However, her “biggest contributions came on the defensive end,” said Grosse Ile head coach Kyle Lesperance. Despite her defensive prowess first, Zucarro did also rack up seven points along the way. The junior defender was named all-district, region, and state at season’s end.

BIANCA HAWTHORNE | Wyandotte Roosevelt: The program at Roosevelt reached newfound heights with a school-best 11 victories in 2024 thanks in large part to the stellar play once more of Bianca Hawthorne in net.
