Learn how to make this homemade beef seasoning or rub that you can keep in your pantry. My favorite way to use this meat seasoning is to rub a steak with it then cook it on the grill. It is really the best steak seasoning no matter how you cook it. Delicious on burgers and roasts too!

This post is sponsored by the New York Beef Council. As usual, all opinions are my own.

I love making homemade seasonings and this one is no exception. They are easy to do and will save you money. Also, you can add more or less salt and control the sodium content in your seasoning.

What spices does this beef seasoning recipe contain?

This seasoning blend contains:

  • salt
  • pepper
  • paprika
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • oregano

I also add a bit of crushed red pepper when I want it spicy.

Labor weekend is coming up and we still have some summer days ahead of us. That means lots of grilling for me so I need a good beef seasoning.

What type of beef do you use with this meat seasoning?

I love using this seasoning for grilling. It is flavorful and holds up well to the bold flavor of beef. One of my favorite cuts of beef to rub this seasoning on is steak.

I happen to grill steak often. My husband and son love steak. In fact, it might be their favorite food ever and I make it often on special occasions. So it's good to keep a jar of this homemade beef seasoning in my pantry for whenever I might need it. Pair it with these grilling guidelines and I am on my way to making a flavorful and juicy steak!

For a special holiday dinner, I like to grill a prime rib roast. This is my seasoning of choice for this special cut of beef too.

I often grill NY strip steaks, flat iron steak and sirloin steaks. This seasoning is always good on them all but it's also terrific sprinkled on or mixed in ground beef to make grilled burgers. Another way I use this blend of spices is when my husband makes something on our smoker. We love brisket and this rub is not too overpowering even if the brisket is being smoked with wood chips.

While I do most of my cooking on the grill in the warmer weather, this seasoning is great to use when broiling steaks or hamburgers in my oven or cooking them on my cast iron pan. This really is the best seasoning for steak or hamburgers no matter what method of cooking you use.

Why make your own meat rubs?

There are several benefits to a DIY seasoning. First you can control the ingredients. So that means, if you need to control sodium, you are able to add as much or as little as you like. I know many people are watching their sodium intake so they do not want salt in their diet. If you are looking for rubs or seasonings that contain no salt, the New York Beef Council has 5 salt free rubs on their recipe page (scroll down to the bottom of the page.)

Everyone likes to save money and by making your own homemade beef seasoning, you will save lots of it. Some of the fancy seasonings and rubs can cost as much as $10 for a small bottle. By making your own, it can cost only a few dollars and you will have extra spices leftover to make others rubs and seasonings.

Allergies are another reason to make your own seasonings and rubs. I have several friends that are allergic to certain spices. When you make your own, you know for sure what ingredients you are using.

Lastly, it takes only 5 minutes! Why not?
